Destination Canada’s Resident Sentiment Tracker – July 27, 2021
Tourism PEI has received the results for the July 27th, 2021 edition of Destination Canada’s COVID-19 Resident Sentiment Tracker. This edition measures how safe Canadians feel traveling and the level of welcome they feel towards visitors.
Overall, feelings of safety and the level of welcome felt towards visitors have been trending upward since June, coinciding with increased vaccination levels and the easing of public health restrictions across the country.
I Feel Safe to Travel
Atlantic Canadians’ feelings of safety toward travel continue to trend upwards with strong growth in the level of safety residents feel travelling to other provinces and territories.
- 93% somewhat/strongly agree that they feel safe travelling to communities near them.
- This is the highest rate in the country and the highest mark achieved since tracking began.
- Québec is reporting the lowest level on this metric at 84% for the current period.
- 93% somewhat/strongly agree that they feel safe travelling to communities within their province.
- This is also the highest rate in the country and the highest mark achieved since tracking began.
- Ontario residents are reporting the lowest level on this metric at 78% for the current period.
- 63% somewhat/strongly agree that they feel safe travelling to other provinces or territories in Canada.
- This is tied for the lowest mark in the country with B.C. residents, but the highest mark achieved on this metric to date. There has been a strong upward trend in this metric for Atlantic Canadians since June 1st.
- Alberta residents reported the highest mark for this metric at 79%.
Compared to the rest of the country, Atlantic Canadian residents are the least likely to feel safe traveling internationally:
- 16% somewhat/strongly agree that they feel safe travelling to the United States
- This is the lowest mark in the country but up from 5% on March 8th.
- Alberta reported the highest mark for this metric at 34%.
- 9% somewhat/strongly agree that they feel safe travelling internationally, the highest reported to date for Atlantic Canadians.
- This is the lowest mark in the country and down from a high of 26% during the July 20th survey wave.
- Alberta reported the highest mark for this metric at 42% for the current period.
Level of Welcome Towards Visitors
Atlantic Canadians’ level of welcome towards visitors is trending up since June 1st and they are beginning to lead the way as the most welcoming residents in the country.
- 90% of Atlantic Canadians somewhat/strongly agree with welcoming visitors from communities near them.

- This is the highest rate in the country by a notable margin.
- This is up from 72% during the June 1st survey wave.
- Ontario residents reported the lowest mark on this metric at 70%.
- 80% of Atlantic Canadians somewhat/strongly agree with welcoming visitors from other parts of their province.

- This is also the highest rate in the country by a notable margin.
- This is up from 66% during the June 1st survey wave.
- Ontario residents reported the lowest mark on this metric at 65%.
- 66% of Atlantic Canadians somewhat/strongly agree with welcoming visitors from other parts of Canada.

- This is strong growth, up from 25% during the June 1st survey wave.
- Atlantic Canadian residents are now only behind Alberta residents at 74% and Saskatchewan/Manitoba residents at 67% as the most welcoming of domestic visitors.
Atlantic Canadian residents are still likely to be unwelcoming of visitors from outside of Canada:
- 24% of Atlantic Canadian residents somewhat/strongly agree with welcoming visitors from the United States, as well as visitors from other countries. These responses are slowly trending upwards incrementally.
